Swine Center

Swine Center

Cal Poly's Swine Unit gives students hands-on experience in a farrow-to-finish swine operation, supporting teaching, research and outreach.

The student-run herd consists of approximately 40 crossbred show pig sows and 60 commercial sows. These sows and their litters provide animals for education and research.

Many of the pigs raised at the center are sold to young people for livestock projects, while others enter the pork market.

Project pig prices vary by season and availability, while roaster and feeder pig prices are determined using market-based pricing.

Protecting herd health is a priority, and the center follows biosecurity protocols to help prevent the spread of disease. Visits are available by appointment only, with posted biosecurity requirements throughout the facility.
