Environmental Horticultural Science

Join the fastest-growing segment of agriculture. Our graduates enter a personally satisfying and diverse field that includes all aspects of ornamental plants. The multibillion-dollar environmental horticulture industry in California includes job opportunities at companies such as:
  • ValleyCrest Companies, Inc.
  • Bay City Flower Co.
  • Pan American Seed
  • TruGreen Companies
  • The Scotts Company
  • Monrovia Nursery
  • Nurseryman's Exchange
  • The Toro Company
  • El Modeno Nursery
  • Paul Ecke Ranch
  • American Golf Corp.
  • Disney

An Environmental Horticultural Science major at Cal Poly gains a broad background in all facets of this diverse field. After mastering the fundamentals, our students receive specialization through advisor-directed electives. Thus, students acquire in-depth knowledge in the production, utilization and maintenance of plants that enhance our environment, as well as in associated areas as landscape construction, integrated pest management, and retail sales and marketing. Students enrolled in the Environmental Horticultural Science major may choose to specialize in:

  • Floriculture/Greenhouse Production
  • Turfgrass Production/Management
  • Horticulture Biotechnology
  • Landscape Contracting/Irrigation
  • Nursery Production
  • Horticulture Communication
  • Retail and Marketing Horticulture
  • Landscape Design/Maintenance

"Both my husband, Joe, and I agree that our Cal Poly degrees have opened many doors for us along with many exciting opportunities. Our education has allowed us to jump in and handle our jobs without additional training."
