Andrew J. Thulin, Ph.D.

Dr. Thulin is a Cal Poly alumnus, and teaches courses in the areas of Swine Production and Applied Nutrition, and has been a guest lecturer in Agricultural Economics courses. He was a key member of the startup team for new animal nutrition business ventures in Mexico, Poland, China, Vietnam and the Philippines. As project manager and team leader of the Outcome Based System (OBS), he was recognized as 1995 corporate winner of the Technical Achievers Circle Award by Cargill, Inc. He was also a member of a team that developed and implemented Cargill’s digestible amino acid/ideal protein models, net energy system and AutoCalc system. While employed at Michigan State University, Dr. Thulin published seven refereed journal articles, 12 abstracts, over 25 papers in conference proceedings, one book chapter, and over 20 Experiment Station bulletins. Pete Agalos joined the animal science department in April 2004 to teach ASCI 324, advanced equine evaluation, ASCI 224, equine science, ASCI 344, equine and human communication, and coach Cal Poly’s horse judging team to be fielded Fall Quarter 2004. Agalos received a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Cal Poly and a master’s degree in agricultural science from Cal Poly.
Agalos is a member of the National Cutting Horse Association, the American Quarter Horse Association, the Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association, the American Paint Horse Association, the American Horse Judging Team Coaches Association, the National Reining Cow Horse Association and the California Agricultural Teacher’s Association.
Matthew A. Burd,

As the equine reproductive physiologist for the animal science department,
Dr. Burd teaches equine reproductive physiology, systemic physiology, equine biomechanics and is an advisor to the equine breeding enterprise.
Burd earned a bachelor’s degree in bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin, a master’s degree in marine science from San Jose State University’s Moss Landing Marine Lab, and then he graduated from the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine in 1996. He opened an equine veterinarian clinic on the Big Island of Hawaii and later worked for Santa Lucia Farm, a full service cutting horse breeding and foaling facility in Santa Ynez, Calif.
M. Steven Daugherty, Ph.D.

Dr. Daugherty teaches Introductory Animal Nutrition and Feeding, Animal Nutrition (metabolism), and the Beef Cattle Feedlot Enterprise Project. His research has focused on the effects of programmed feeding and limited energy intake on the feedlot performance and carcass characteristics of beef cattle. In addition, he has done contract research investigating the feeding value of wine grape solids as a protein supplement for growing/finishing cattle. Dr. Daugherty is active in the American Society of Animal Science and the California Animal Nutrition Conference. Specialty: Beef Cattle Nutrition.

Mark
S. Edwards, Ph.D

Mark Edwards' teaching and research efforts are focused in equine and
non-domestic animal nutrition, science-based diet management and
husbandry practices. Prior to joining Cal Poly he was the head of
the Department of Nutrition of the Smithsonian National Zoological
Park, Washington DC. He led the organization through a systematic
review and revision of the animal nutrition program, as well as
facility renovations at the National Zoo and Conservation and
Research Center, Front Royal VA.
Prior to joining the National Zoological Park, Edwards served the
Zoological Society of San Diego for eleven years as their first
staff nutritionist. He developed and coordinated the nutrition
division of the Veterinary Services Department at both the San Diego
Zoo and the San Diego Wild Animal Park, with the responsibility of
managing aspects of dietary husbandry and nutrition for the combined
animal collections, totaling 8,000 specimens.
Michael H. Hall, M.S

Mike Hall is the senior beef cattle specialist for the animal
science department. He is in charge of the beef cattle program at
Cal Poly and the Cal Poly Bull Test. He earned his bachelor’s degree
in animal science at Cal Poly and his master’s degree in animal
science with a concentration in animal breeding and genetics at
Kansas State University.
Hall manages all aspects of Cal Poly's purebred beef herd and
conducts research in the area of resource management. In
addition to managing the purebred herd, Hall is adviser to the
bull test enterprise, artificial insemination enterprise, and
heifer calving enterprise. He teaches both introduction to
animal science and commercial beef management.
Brooke Humphrey, Ph.D.

Brooke Humphrey is a nutrition and immunology
specialist for the Animal Science Department.
Humphrey earned his bachelor’s degree in animal
science from Cal Poly in 1998, before going onto
UC Davis for his master’s and Ph.D. After earning his
Ph.D. in nutrition in 2004, Humphrey worked as an assistant professor at University of Maryland, College Park, in the department of animal and avian sciences. In January 2007, Humphrey returned to Cal Poly as an assistant professor.
At Cal Poly, Humphrey teaches ASCI 320, Physiological Chemistry
of Animals, ASCI 350, Applied Nonruminant Nutrition, Vet Science
440, Immunology and Diseases of Animals, and Poultry Management
330, Poultry Meat Production and Processing. His position also
includes a 25 percent research appointment, and supervision of
the poultry unit, and quail, broiler and laying enterprises.

Joel Judge

Joel Judge graduated from Cal Poly with a bachelor’s degree in agribusiness and
animal science. He returned to the academic world after 12 years
working in the farming and ranching industries.
Judge worked as manager of Sweetwater Cattle Company, located in the
Los Banos, Calif. area and then as operation manager for Vintage
Angus where he also managed the company’s bull sale and was in
charge of marketing, before returning to Cal Poly.
Judge teaches ASCI
221, introduction to beef production, and ASCI 304, animal breeding.
Judge is the advisor to the Escuela Ranch Cow-Calf Enterprise and
co-advisor to the Bull Test Enterprise. He is a member of the
California Angus Association, the American Angus Association, the
California Cattlemen’s Association and the National Cattlemen’s Beef
Association.

Dr. Jaymie Noland, DVM

Noland teaches
many of the veterinary science courses. She is active in advising
roles both for students academic advising and the pre-veterinary and
intercollegiate dressage clubs on campus. She maintains close
association with the veterinary profession by practicing in a small
animal clinic during the summer and serving as the area
representative to the California Veterinary Medical Association. She
serves as one of the area's Legislative Key Contacts for the CVMA.
Dr. Daniel

Peterson leads the
animal science department’s program in applied biotechnology through
teaching and research. Peterson teaches a laboratory course,
applied biotechnology in animal science,
focusing on molecular biology techniques, experimental systems and
design relating to animal systems. Peterson also teaches
physiological chemistry and contributes to many other courses within
the department. In addition to teaching, Peterson conducts
research on the molecular aspects of nutrient metabolism and the
interaction of nutrition and genome function.

Dr. Pettey earned his bachelor’s degree in animal science at Cal
Poly where he was a member of the livestock judging team, and joined
the animal science department in March 2004 as the new swine
professor and supervisor of the Swine Unit. Dr. Pettey teaches ASCI
222, systems of swine production, ASCI 223, systems of sheep
production labs, ASCI 350, applied nonruminant nutrition and ASCI
102, principles of animal science.
Pettey teaches the science of animal production and guides students
as they develop their skills in the management and production of
healthy, high quality livestock and the conception and completion of
scientifically sound research projects. His research interests
include applied swine research projects in nutrition, reproduction,
housing systems and animal welfare. Regarding nonruminant nutrition,
his interests include environmental impacts of livestock production
and the growth and development of whole body tissues.
Pettey is a member of the American Society of Animal Science.
William E. Plummer, Ph.D.

Dr. Plummer teaches Reproductive Physiology and Anatomy, Swine Science, Senior Seminar, Senior Project, and the Reproduction Enterprise for the Cal Poly Bull Test. His current projects include training potential graduate students in embryo manipulation, research in conjunction with biotechnology development, and utilizing computers and CD-ROM technology for teaching reproductive anatomy. He currently co-advises the Veterinary Science Club. He is a Charter Diplomate of the American College of Animal Physiology. His interests are reproduction in exotic animals and wildlife, shooting sports and other outdoor activities. Specialty: Reproductive Physiology and Biotechnology.

Mr. Rutherford has been Director of Cal Poly sheep operations since 1984. He is a professional sheep judge, sheep shearer, and advisor. Mr. Rutherford teaches Systems of Sheep Production, Sheep Management, Issues in Animal Agriculture, and Holistic Management. His related professional interests are sustainable resource management, intensive grazing management and sheep industry issues (public lands use, health and marketing). Dr. Spiller is a Cal Poly alumnus. He manages the Poultry Unit and teaches Poultry Management courses. His club involvement includes the Poultry Club and the Alpha Zeta Advisory Committee. Dr. Spiller provides consulting for commercial egg producers.
