Geology Concentration

A student performs watershed management work in the field at Swanton Pacific Ranch learning photo-monitoring methods, hydrologic instrumentation, survey channel morphology and analyze acquired field data.

Understanding the Earth Beneath Our Feet

Geology helps us understand the forces that shape our planet and the resources that sustain our communities.

Through hands-on fieldwork and laboratory experiences, the Geology concentration explores Earth’s materials, processes and history, from mineralogy and seismology to geomorphology and structural geology. You’ll develop the technical skills to collect, interpret and communicate geologic data while preparing for careers in the geosciences and professional licensure.

What You’ll Take Away

  1. The knowledge and technical skills to collect, analyze and interpret geologic data through fieldwork, laboratory research and professional practice.
  2. Hands-on experience in mineralogy, geochemistry, geomorphology, structural geology and other geologic disciplines that shape our understanding of Earth's systems.
  3. A strong foundation for careers in geoscience and preparation to pursue California's Geologist-in-Training Examination and Professional Geologist licensure.
