Wildland Fire Concentration

A Fire Ecology and Wildlife Hazard Planning student works a prescribed burn.

Building Resilience Through Fire Science

Wildfire is a natural part of many ecosystems, but changing conditions are creating new challenges for landscapes and communities.

The Wildland Fire concentration prepares you to understand fire behavior and manage fire and fuels across wildlands and the urban interface. Through hands-on learning, you’ll explore fire science, technology, policy and the use of fire as an ecosystem management tool while preparing to build more resilient landscapes and communities.

What You’ll Take Away

  1. The knowledge and technical skills to understand fire behavior, assess wildfire risk and manage fuels across wildland and urban-interface landscapes.
  2. Hands-on experience applying fire science, technology and ecosystem management practices to support healthier forests, resilient landscapes and wildfire preparedness.
  3. A strong professional foundation for careers in wildfire and natural resource management, including eligibility for the Association for Fire Ecology’s Wildland Fire Practitioner Certification.
