SAN LUIS OBISPO — The annual Cal Poly Performance Horse Sale on June 3 epitomizes the university’s Learn by Doing philosophy. Twenty-five horses, the majority of them bred, foaled and trained by Cal Polystudents over a two-year period as part of the Quarter Horse Enterprise student project, will be auctioned at the sale.

Fifteen 3-year-olds, seven 2-year-olds and three broodmares with foals will be auctioned. All have been trained by Cal Poly students to work cattle, ride on trails and perform arena work such as stops and turn-arounds.

All proceeds benefit the Cal Poly Equine Center. The auction is the largest fundraiser for the center each year.

The 2017 Performance Horse Sale will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 3, at the Cal Poly Equine Center. The event will begin with a silent auction and will include lunch at noon with a presentation by Professor Fernando Campos, followed by a preview of the horses and finally the live auction at 2:30 p.m.

On sale day, students will demonstrate the horses’ athletic ability under saddle during dry arena and cow work. Potential buyers will also be able to visit with the student trainers to learn more about the horses’ characteristics at a meet-and-greet from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 2, at the same location. A live demonstration of Western Dressage and a horse health presentation by Zoetis will also be offered.

About the Equine Center
The Cal Poly Equine Center is a multi-use facility built for educational purposes which expands across nearly 700 acres on the Cal Poly campus in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The pinnacle of the Equine Center is its breeding program. Students participate in the breeding, foaling, training and riding of Cal Poly Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds. The Quarter Horse Enterprise Project and sale is managed entirely by Cal Polystudents. Each year 15 to 20 students are selected to start and train Cal Poly bred Quarter Horses, along with some donated horses. The project horses are trained completely by the students and are geared towards both performance and ranch work.
