Beekeeping Experts to Speak on Honey Bee Sustainability Nov. 1 and 8 at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Two experts in bee sustainability will speak at Cal Poly in a two-part mini-series titled “Successful Beekeeping in Today’s Environment.” The program is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Center for Sustainability and Farmer Experiential Education and Development (FEED) program. It will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. two consecutive Wednesdays, Nov. 1 and Nov. 8, at Cal Poly.
Joe Carson, president and CEO of several successful honey and beekeeping supply companies, including Alaska Heavenly Honey, Complete Bee Honey Bee Food Supplements Company, and eKoBeekeeping Supply, will be the featured speaker Nov. 1. Carson has held many leadership roles in the industry, including with the American Beekeeping Federation, American Honey Producers, and the Western Apicultural Society. His presentation will be held in the Bonderson Building (No. 197), Room 104.
Gene Brandi, owner of Gene Brandi Apiaries, will speak Nov. 8. Brandi, an alumnus of the Cal Poly Agribusiness Department, started working with bees as a student and founded a commercial apiary in 1978. He and his son, Mike Brandi, now manage 2,000 colonies in Central California. Gene Brandi is president of the American Beekeeping Federation, served as chairman of the National Honey Board for three years, and served on the board of directors of the California State Beekeepers Association for 37 years. His presentation will be held in the Advanced Technology Laboratories (No. 7), in the Keck Auditorium.
Both speakers will address topics such as honey bee species, management, health and health challenges, beekeeping equipment, honey bee products, and long-term sustainability.
