Newly Admitted Students Day

What can you expect?

It's always best to arrive early. We are expecting 3000+ people to come to the college so the campus will be full—as will parking. Please enter the campus at the Highland entrance via Highway 1/Santa Rosa Street. (Click here for directions.) You will be directed to a parking lot close to the College of Ag properties, near the Equine unit, the Horticulture unit, and not far from our Farm Shop, where you will be having lunch. Plan to wear walking shoes—the campus is large and hilly, and you will have a lot to see.

Once you park your car, your day will begin with a stroll past the Farm Shop on your way up the hill to check in with our Poly Reps and then attend the University Welcome with President Jeffrey D. Armstrong. Following that, our Student Welcome Committee—students from each of our majors—will be waiting outside the Recreation Center to lead all newly admitted students to the Farm Shop for a special presentation, while our Parent Welcome Committee will be waiting to lead family members to our Parent Welcome with Dean Andrew Thulin and guest speakers.

At approximately 11:15 a.m., our Department Heads will arrive to escort family members to the Farm Shop where they will join their student for a family-style BBQ lunch completey prepared from field to table and then served by our College of Ag students. We will have Cal Poly beef hamburgers (veggie burgers will also be available), along with garnishes and salads made from produce from our gardens, finishing with homemade cookies—all of the food will be prepared from scratch by our Food Science & Nutrition classes. Our lunch is designed (per student wishes) to be Zero Waste and you will find us using compostable cups and plates, there will be recycle bins for the soda cans, and our water is being donated by a local water supply company—Crystal Springs Water of SLO—in order to help us cut down on plastic bottles. Please be sure to look for the Zero Waste, Recycle and Trash signs when you get ready to clear your table.

Following lunch, you will be invited to attend a presentation from the department you were admitted in to. This will be a great time to hear from the department, ask questions of faculty and students, and learn more about why you want to accept admissions to Cal Poly's College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences. After these presentations, the Animal Science Department, BioResource & Agricultural Engineering Department, Dairy Science Department and Horticulture & Crop Science Department will hold department tours of their facilities.

Just when you think the day is finished, join us for the 75th anniversary of our Poly Royal Rodeo, beginning at 6 p.m. at our Rodeo Arena (tickets for sale on site).

You might want to download an app to your smartphone if you have one: Guidebook will have a special page for Cal Poly Open House 2015, where you will find a campus schedules, maps, and links to our college web page and department web pages—all of which will be updated automatically.
