The Learn by Doing Endowment provides funding for much-needed improvements to existing classrooms and labs, as well as the creation of spaces dedicated to the study of program-specific subjects.

The Learn by Doing Endowment has funded:

  • Animal Science Department Musculoskeletal Lab - Fourteen skeletons of various animal species — including an ostrich, horse, cow, cat, dog and rat — allow students an intimate hands-on anatomy and physiology experience. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art computer programming, a webcam and projector to demonstrate dissections, as well as multiple screens throughout the laboratory for student engagement.
  • BioResource and Agricultural Engineering Department Electronics Lab - Used by nearly 200 students per quarter in more than a dozen major courses the BioResource and Agricultural Engineering Department and by the Tractor Pull Team, Quarter Scale Design Team, and ASABE Robotics Competition Team, the electronics lab was outfitted with new computer monitors. The equipment will enhance learning for students in agricultural automation and robotics courses.
  • Food Science and Nutrition Department Human Metabolics Lab – New additions included hydration assessment kits, a point-of-care lipid and glucose analyzer and a ParvoMedics facemask. With this new technology, undergraduate and graduate students are able to evaluate oxygen consumption and utilization in active and resting states, analyze the effects of exercise on macronutrients, and perform clinical nutrition assessments to identify risk factors for heart disease and diabetes.
  • Agribusiness Department Classrooms – In 2020, faculty and students were able to pivot to a hybrid model of in-person and remote learning, with the endowment providing funding for state-of-the-art video conferencing systems in three of our Agribusiness Department classrooms. This technology allowed instructors in the rooms to bring in outside speakers virtually, impacting all CAFES students as these devices and spaces are utilized by multiple departments.
