Cultivate Summer 2025
FROM THE DEAN

Dear Friends,
Since stepping into the role of dean of the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences in July, one thing has become crystal clear: this college is alive with energy, passion, and possibility. Our faculty, staff, and students don’t just show up – they bring a spark that makes this place so much more than a college. It’s a hub of innovation, collaboration and heart.
I’ve also had the chance to connect with many of our industry partners, and I’m eager to meet even more. Their support is what fuels our Learn by Doing promise, giving students the chance to roll up their sleeves and thrive in real-world settings. Strengthening those connections – across California and beyond – will be a big part of my work ahead.
In this issue, you’ll meet recent graduates who are already making their mark – from forestry management to climate change research – and you’ll catch up with current students making waves, including a bioresource and agricultural engineering major who was just elected ASI president for the 2025–26 academic year. Their drive is proof that the passion found here carries far beyond campus.
I’m excited about the future we’re building together. A future where every student has the opportunity to learn, lead and innovate. A future where our research and partnerships continue to break new ground. And a future where connection – whether in the field, the lab or over a cup of coffee – keeps us moving forward.
Here’s to the road ahead. Let’s keep pushing boundaries, together.
Warmly,
BRIAN HORGAN
Dean
